Dutasteride and Hairloss

Dutasteride (Avodart™) is an FDA-Approved prescription drug for benign prostatic hyperplasia which may be beneficial in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness).

Dutasteride is a dual 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It is currently undergoing trials in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia which suggest that taken in capsule form can be successful in restoring hair to certain males suffering androgen related alopecia. It doe this by interfering with the 5-alpha-reductase enzymes that break down the male hormone (testosterone) and turn it into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – the cause of MPA (male pattern alopceia.

Dutasteride may be effective where Finasteride (Propecia) is not.
